As you have noticed, I have been reaching for the stars with my TV inspired recipes lately while also reaching for some new and interesting ingredients! Grant and I have been hooked on the Netflix show, “Santa Clarita Diet”. It is just so bloody good! Yes, I had to say it! So of course I wanted to create the perfect inspired food, or in this case, drink, that emulated this hilarious modern zombie show while also capturing the essence of the beautiful town of Santa Clarita. So the Blood Orange Smoothie was born!
You can’t have a blood orange smoothie without the star of the show, Blood Oranges! Blood oranges differ from the regular naval oranges due to their “bloody” interior. They are naturally red and quite striking in appearance. These oranges are not as sweet, and to me, tasted more like grapefruit with a slight bitterness. As you can see from the photo below, when I was faced with a bag of blood oranges, I made blood orange juice! It took me a very long time, but I got 2 cups of fresh juice from 11 blood oranges. I also incorporated some pulp.
The Rest Of The Crew
When adapting this blood orange smoothie recipe, I wanted to take into account that bitterness of the blood oranges. I also wanted to make this a healthy smoothie recipe. I have a couple of ways that you can make this blood orange smoothie. First, you can take a very minimalist approach. If doing it this way, you will be looking at only 5 ingredients, and a sorbet like smoothie that is refreshing and cool for the Summer and Spring! This is the way I made the blood orange smoothies on my accompanying video, which you can find here, SMOOTHIE RECIPE VIDEO
Second way is to add a few other ingredients, which I will give you at the end in the recipe section. Both ways are delicious!
Making Your Smoothie
Have your juice made and your strawberries all washed, halved, and ready. Then, throw it in a Vitamix or blender with ice and honey. And yes, that is fake blood all over me! I was in my Santa Clarita Diet character, ok?!
I used a medium to medium high setting on my Vitamix. I wanted to leave some texture to this blood orange smoothie, so it was slightly icy.
Blood Orange Smoothie
- 2 cups of Blood Orange Juice (from approximately 11 blood oranges)
- 1.5 cups of strawberries, washed and halved.
- 1/4 cup greek yogurt
- 2 teaspoons honey or agave
- 1 cup of ice
- Garnish with blood orange slices
- Put all of your ingredients into a Vitamix or blender and blend until smooth!
- Use this alternative recipe that adds in these enhancements: 1 bartlett pear, peeled and sliced, 1 handful of kale, 1/2 cup of raspberries or blueberries
- Take a look at The Vitamix I used in the video and recipe:
