The Royal Wedding is just days away, and I’m getting excited to have a viewing party filled with royal inspired food and drinks! So it’s time to get to know our American Princess, Meghan Markle, even better! Meghan Markle’s favorite drink is a Negroni, so before the big day, I wanted to share the recipe for a Negroni with a royal twist. This would make a perfect accompaniment to my Lemon Elderflower Martini and my Lemon Elderflower Cake for your viewing parties, or anytime you want to channel your inner royal!

My Mom lived in England for a big part of her life, and she loved Princess Diana. Princess Diana exuded such grace and elegance, so of course when my Mother had a royal encounter with Princess Diana and Prince William, that is still one of the highlights of her life! And let me tell you, she loves to tell the story of this encounter as much as you will let her! When I was a little girl and we were visiting England and we were mere steps away from Princess Diana and Prince William. I called out “Hi William! Hi William”, and Princess Diana actually had him wave back at me! How exciting! I wish I could remember this!
Meghan Markle has so many of the qualities that Princess Diana possessed. She has such poise and style, and is involved in charities on a global level. Furthermore, she has made such an impression on the world as both a future princess and a woman of color. Her style was well-known even before she was involved with Prince Harry and she had a lifestyle blog, The Tig. Her fine taste expands from that gorgeous wardrobe to food and drink! So that’s where I come in! The Negroni is a ritzy cocktail that is comprised of a Campari, vermouth, and gin. So, Ritzy Chefs, let’s get shaken! Or stirred is good too!
The History of A Negroni Cocktail
The Negroni Cocktail was invented in at Cafe Casoni in Florence, Italy in 1919. Legend has it that Count Camillo Negroni asked his bartender to make him an Americano, but with a twist. He wanted the club soda swapped with gin. The bartender, Scarselli did this and also garnished the drink with an orange peel instead of lemon. This Count was awesome! I mean, he wanted more alcohol and to elevate this classic drink! We would have been friends! Find out more here, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Negroni.
Campari
A Negroni is usually used as an aperitif, which means that people drink it to wet their appetite before a meal. As I do not ever have that problem, I would just use this to get hungry again before my evening dessert!
The star of this gorgeous cocktail is Campari. Campari is a liqueur that made up of water, alcohol, herbs, and fruit. Even though that beautiful red color may fool you into believing this would be a sweet liqueur, it’s actually not. Campari is actually bitter, herbal, and citrusy. It’s a unique flavor for sure.
The Royal Twist
Like Count Negroni and Meghan Markle, I too like to take things up a notch! I decided this original Negroni could use a royal and ritzy twist that would enhance the flavor while adding a boost of citrus. Orange Blossom Water is also known as Neroli, and it’s potent like bitters, so only one or two drops is needed. It is elegant and floral, with a bitter orange flavor that kicks up this Negroni to the level the Count would have approved of! I kinda think this will be Meghan Markle’s new favorite way to drink a Negroni…! Let’s get the word out to our American Princess, ok?!
Negroni Cocktail
Creating this Negroni is straightforward. You can shake or stir it and you will get the same result. You will add your Campari, Gin, Vermouth, and only one or two drops of orange blossom water. Then stir and garnish with an orange!
