Raise your hand if you love sleep! Now keep it high and happy because I’m about to give you the most beautiful elixir that is said to decrease stress and give you a better sleep. We are talking about Moon Milk! I am sure you have seen those ethereal photos floating around social media. I hope I’m not too late in posting here, but I wanted to create a soothing tonic that was not only gorgeous but tasted just as good as it looked.
As I’m sure most of you know, warm milk before bed has long been the old wives tale of sending us off to slumberland. Moon Milk is simply warm milk that is combined with warm spices (like cardamom and cinnamon) along with ashwagandha powder, or another adaptogen, and sweetner.
Moon Milk is the top wellness trend these days, so of course I had to try it! So I ditched the wine for a night (GASP!), got cozy in my PJs, and made some moon milk!
My Moon Milk recipe combines milk with warm spices and Freeze Dried Blueberries. The freeze dried blueberries give it that pretty purple color while adding a subtle flavor to tone down the Ashwagandha and round out the spices and maple syrup.
Let’s get sleepy!
Ayurvedic Medicine & Ashwagandha
Ayurvedic medicine was created in India over 3000 years ago and uses herbs and minerals to promote natural healing. To learn all about it check out, https://nccih.nih.gov/health/ayurveda/introduction.htm.
Ashwagandha Powder is an Ayurvedic herb that is an adaptogen. An Adaptogen is used to help with stress. Ashwagandha is said to promote wellness, balance hormones, relieve stress, treat insomnia, and more. Find out all about Ashwagandha here, https://www.webmd.com/vitamins/ai/ingredientmono-953/ashwagandha. Ashwagandha is a main ingredient in most moon milks. Please note that Ashwagandha is considered a sleep aid. You should research Ashwagandha to make sure it is right for you before trying it.
Furthermore, this moon milk recipe can also be made without the Ashwagandha and will still be soothing and relaxing.
How To Make Moon Milk
You will bring your milk up to a simmer on the stove top. Then add in your cinnamon, pinches of cardamom and cinnamon, Ashwagandha, freeze dried blueberries, ghee, and maple syrup. The freeze dried blueberries will naturally color your moon milk and make it purple.
Then after a few minutes you will put this purple moon milk mixture into a Blender. Blend it up to get it all foamy and blended.
Then pour right into your mug.
Then top your moon milk with freeze dried blueberries and lavender leaves or dried flowers. Snap a pic and tag #ritzymom on Instagram before you drift off to sleep!
3…2…1…zzzzzz!
For the opposite of Moon Milk, try my SUN SHAKE! The sun shake also has an adaptogen, only it’s Maca for energy. Sun shake by day and Moon milk by night!!
