You may have heard of Timur Peppers since they are one of the hottest food trends of 2018! Timur Peppers are being used throughout the culinary world in cocktails, desserts, and more. This zany spice adds a kick and an essence of grapefruit, so it makes a spicy enhancement to a regular Gin and Tonic. Bartenders are grinding a bit into the drink to take it up a notch, however, for this Timur Pepper Gin and Tonic, we are going to start with Timur Pepper infused Gin. Then, since Timur pepper has the scent and taste of grapefruit, we will add a splash of grapefruit juice along with grapefruit segments. Garnished with a sprig or two of rosemary to enhance the juniper berry and earthiness of the gin, this Timur Gin And Tonic is festive, unique, and unforgettable!
Timur Pepper
Timur Pepper, or Timut Pepper as it is also known as, is similar to Sichuan peppercorns. This spice is citric, earthy, and bold. It has a spicy kick and even leaves a numbing sensation in your mouth or wherever the pepper comes in contact with. I learned that when I filmed the video recipe demonstration for this Timur Pepper Gin and Tonic!
The Timur Pepper hails from Nepal. It looks much like a peppercorn, but has a green tinted inner shell that will infuse the alcohol with a hint of color. It is the “it” spice right now, and since it difficult to find in stores, people are buying it in bulk from stands along the roads of Nepal to bring back to the US. This spice is being used in Michelin Star Restaurants, at gourmet food road shows, and in specialty cocktails like this Timur Pepper Gin and Tonic.
Timur Peppercorn Infused Gin
The big difference, and flavorful twist, to my Timur Pepper Gin and Tonic, is this special infused Gin.
For this Timur Pepper infused Gin, you will need a clean glass jar with a lid. I don’t sterilize the glass since Gin is pretty much like antiseptic, right? However, you can definitely sterilize the glass jar as you would if you were to fill it with preserves.
For ever 8 ounces of Gin, use 2 teaspoons of whole Timur Peppercorns. You can find the Timur Peppercorns online here, The Spice Lab Timut Peppercorns.
Add your Timur peppercorns and gin to the glass jar, close it, and refrigerate it up to 24 hours. Note that you can infuse alcohol with herbs, spices, and fruit for varying lengths of time. For this strong spice, go with the shorter infusion time.
You will see how the Timur pepper also adds a green tinge to the gin, which makes for a pretty drink in the end!
Grapefruit
As I mentioned earlier, this Timur Pepper Gin and Tonic will have a splash of fresh grapefruit juice to enhance that Timur Pepper. I always like to add segments of whatever juice I am using in cocktails like this. The grapefruit segments, like when making a drink like, Summer Sangria, will add flavor, juice, and aesthetics. It’s also fun to snack on the alcohol infused fruit at the end!
Garnishing
To Garnish your Timur Pepper Gin and Tonic, you can use any type of herb you like. I chose rosemary sprigs to further enhance the earthiness and robustness of the juniper berries in the gin. It plays well with the citrus as well, and lends to a more festive look and flavor.
Making Your Timur Pepper Gin and Tonic
The first step to making this Timur Pepper Gin and Tonic is to infuse your Gin with the peppercorns overnight.
Then you will fill a glass with ice. Add your timur pepper infused gin by using a mesh Strainer to collect the peppercorns. Next add tonic and grapefruit juice. Give it a good stir. Then drop in your grapefruit segments and garnish.
Cheers!
