I am seeing Fall decorations and canned pumpkin everywhere I look, which means it is now an acceptable time to start posting about pumpkin! To kick off the pumpkin season, I have a dessert bar that brings pumpkin pie swirled into every bite of a chewy chocolate brownie. These pumpkin brownies are a festive way to add some pizzazz and autumn essence to brownies. The pumpkin pie swirl of these brownies is spiced with pumpkin spice, so the addition livens up these brownies and brings them up to fall feasting level. These are a true crowd pleasing treat that are simple to whip up and easily doubled for large gatherings or seasonal bake sales.
We started the day with a flat tire, so Grant and I swapped cars for the day so I could get his fixed. This led to Bea missing her backpack for school, a battle between the girls over which car seat they wanted in Dad’s car, and a day that spiraled into a desperate need for a chocolate fix. Headaches and stressful days just need a dessert that gives you pause and satisfaction, don’t you think?
I’ll be honest, I eat dessert every day of my life, Besides developing recipes, I have a sweet tooth that gets full on angry if I don’t have treats in the evening! But when I want to switch things up I head to the store and wander around for flavor twist and seasonal inspiration. As you all know, Fall is approaching and the markets are boasting harvest foods, especially all things pumpkin related. The thought of pumpkin brownies got my stomach growling and sweet tooth throbbing, so much so that Tilly and I worked on pumpkin brownies and forgot all about the tire! Well, there’s always tomorrow! For now, let’s bake!
For these pumpkin brownies you’ll start with a fudgy brownie batter that has bittersweet chocolate chips throughout. These dual chocolate flavors meld with the pumpkin batter so you get pools of flavor and gooey pockets in every bite. Pumpkin Pie “Swirl”
Make your pumpkin pie batter first and set aside.
Whisk your egg yolk, pumpkin, pumpkin pie spice, and vanilla.
Making the Pumpkin Brownies
To make the pumpkin brownies you will want to use parchment paper to line your square pan. This will ensure those edges get high and crispy, that the middle puffs then falls within the edges, and most importantly, that they lift right out of your pan for optimal cutting.
First, melt up your butter.
Meanwhile, whisk the eggs with the cocoa powder, salt, vanilla, and baking powder. Whisk until smooth before adding your sugar. Whisk in melted butter.
Next, add in your flour.
Use a spatula to put the brownie batter into your pan, making sure to scrape out the bowl. Smooth out.
Then put 6 dollops of pumpkin pie batter evenly around. The pumpkin pie mixture makes approx. 6 tablespoons worth, so it helps to use a tablespoon to drop on the pumpkin.
To make your swirl take a knife and swirl it around the pan!
Then bake it for about 40-45 minutes. Just like my Dark Chocolate Brownies, Let these cool completely! It’s torture, but it helps them finish setting up and makes it ready to cut.

Pumpkin Brownies are a fudge like brownie base with pools of melting bittersweet chocolate and a pumpkin pie spiced swirl.
- 2 large eggs
- 1 1/8 cup granulated sugar
- 3/4 cup cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 stick unsalted butter melted
- 3/4 cup AP flour
- 3/4 cup bittersweet chocolate chips
- 1/2 cup pure pumpkin puree not pumpkin pie filling!
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- pinch salt
- 3 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
- 1 large egg yolk
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line a 9 inch square pan with parchment paper. Butter the paper.
Melt butter and set aside.
In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs with the vanilla extract, cocoa powder, salt and baking powder.
Then add in sugar and whisk before adding melted butter.
Next, add flour and whisk until smooth.
Fold in bittersweet chocolate chips.
In a small bowl, whisk egg yolk, pumpkin, brown sugar, pumpkin pie spice, and vanilla, and pinch of salt.
Put all of the brownie batter into pan.
Using a tablespoon, drop 6 spoonfuls of pumpkin filling across the batter. Use a knife to "swirl" it around.
Bake for approx. 45 minutes.
Allow to cool completely!
