Does just looking at this shimmering shamrock sour make you feel lucky? Swirls of edible gold glitter and green make this St. Patrick’s Day cocktail alluring, mesmerizing, and fun. And I going to be making this live on Show Me St. Louis on March 13th at 10 am during a St. Patrick’s Day cocktail extravaganza!
Below is a link to my appearance on KSDK’s Show Me St. Louis, where I made not one, not two, but THREE St. Patrick’s Day Green Drinks! Once it is up on YouTube, I will add that video as well.
This shimmering shamrock sour is a sweet and slightly sour mix of Irish whiskey, sour apple liqueur, simple syrup, and fresh lemon juice. Edible luster dust is added to make it shimmer, shine, and sparkle!
Using & consuming edible luster dust
The only special equipment you need for this drink is a cocktail shaker. The star of this cocktail is edible gold luster dust. This adds a metallic hue to the drink. While silver also looks really cool, I went with gold for St. Patrick’s Day.
Edible Luster dust is safe to consume, comes in tons of colors, and it can be used in a variety of ways. It is often brushed onto cakes and cake decorations, or sprinkled over cookies. Additionally, it’s used to make cocktails like this Shimmering Shamrock Sour shimmer.
I made this Shimmering Shamrock Sour with both green luster dust and gold to show you the difference.
Let’s talk about consuming edible luster dust. The kind I use, like for this Shimmering Shamrock Cocktail, is made out of sugar, cornstarch, and pearlescent color additives. This glitter isn’t always readily available and is found online or in the cake decorating aisle of some shops. It is important that you get the right kind and not one that states something like, non-toxic. This is specifically for food And is approved by the FDA as food grade.
You can certainly leave out the gold edible luster dust. This is only for appearance and doesn’t effect the taste of this Apple Shamrock Sour Cocktail.
Sour Apple Pucker
I had not had any sour Apple pucker since college! I used to love sweet drinks and anything that was bright in color. Yep, I was all Cosmos and “sex and the city”! The old me would have loved that she grew up to write about cocktails and food. And she definitely maybe would love that she got over that love of sweet and artificially flavored drinks!
But this shimmering shamrock sour is such a cool cocktail that kind of brings together sophistication with glitz. It’s a drink that has sweetness and tartness, shine and smoothness.
Sour Apple pucker is bright green. In case you’ve never seen or heard of it. It’s flavored a lot like a sour Apple jolly rancher. And it’s perfect to use when you want to make a green holiday drink like this Apple Whiskey Sour.
Irish Whiskey
Since this shimmering shamrock cocktail is all about St. Patrick’s Day fun, it used Irish whiskey.
Irish whiskey does differ from American whiskey. The main ingredients of Irish whiskey are barley, malt, and water. American whiskey contained rye, corn, or wheat. Furthermore, Irish whiskey is triple distilled, leading to a smoother and lighter taste.
How To Make The Shimmering Shamrock Sour
All you have to do to make this shimmering shamrock sour is add all of the ingredients to a cocktail shaker with ice in it.
To activate the awesome golf metallic swirl within each glass, the cocktail had to be vigorously shaken with ice until it is chilled.
Then pour the cocktail into the glass of your choice and garnish with an optional apple slice.
The glitter dust settles at the bottom of the glass over time. So put a cocktail stirrer into each glass so the shimmer can be reactivated as desired.
