I’m so late to the CBD and Golden Milk game. But better late than never! What’s funny about that is, my Mom used to make us Golden milk when we had colds growing up. So for me, this craze wasn’t new. But the use of CBD was one I only recently tried. For Ritzy Mom recipe research, of course! At least my popular moon milk got me by until I was able to combine these two fitting food trends and create the only CBD Golden Milk you will ever need. And now we can all get really relaxed, because that’s exactly what CBD and Golden lattes are aimed to do!
This CBD enhanced golden milk is slightly spiced, warm, rich in flavor, silky, and much like a turmeric version of a chai latte.
Sri Lanka is an island near the tip of India. So being Sri Lankan In heritage, we have recipes, tonics, and health and wellness practices similar to India. Moon milk or Golden Lattes, are a vibrantly colored and relaxing drink that has swept our Instagram feeds in the last year. Even Whole Foods boasts posters of the beautiful and alluring Golden Milk Latte in their stores. There are pre-made versions that I have a link for below, but homemade is always best!
CBD Trend
CBD is a trend I’ve been seeing all over the internet and social media. While CBD is a chemical compound found in marijuana, consuming it is not the same thing as smoking marijuana. Good news, because I can’t smoke pot for several reasons. I admittedly have thought about it before! But I have severe asthma and now two kids, so marijuana just isn’t for me. Though many of you may be shaking your heads and thinking I’m missing out! But CBD has definitely intrigued me!
The timing for this CBD Golden Milk is also good for me since I’ve got a lot going on. As I mentioned in my Lemon Layer Cake, my mom surprised us with a super long visit while our guest area is undergoing a remodel. So she was bunking up with the girls and no one slept for 10 nights! My brother-in-law has a newborn and I promise you that he’s getting more sleep than me these days!
So I need some serious “serenity now” and some sleep. But you know how you get insomnia when you’re overtired and your mind won’t shut off? That’s where this CBD Golden Milk comes in handy!

Golden Milk / Golden Latte
If you’re on Instagram then you know that #goldenlatte and #goldenmilk have been trending for several months. So what is so special about these golden milk lattes? It is all about the turmeric and the active compound of curcumin. Turmeric has anti inflammatory properties and helps with the vitality and health of the whole body. Curcumin is a substance found in turmeric that has some health benefits. Some say it may aid in the inflammation from arthritis, and may even block the growth of certain tumors. You can read about here, https://www.webmd.com/ .
Turmeric milk has long been an ayervedic tonic to soothe colds, calm anxiety, and aid with insomnia. In India golden milk lattes are called
haldi ka doodh. It is a bedtime drink. As I mentioned, I grew up drinking Golden Milk. As someone with asthma, I always had horrible colds and inflammation. So my Mother used to often make me a golden milk with full fat canned coconut milk, a dab of ghee, fresh turmeric and ginger root, along with a hefty trickle of golden syrup. She would steep this golden milk latte with ceylon cinnamon, whole cardamom pods, and peppercorns over low heat. Then pour in a large mug with all the leftover foam topping it. Hence, how it resembles a latte.
Be aware that turmeric can really stain your teeth! In fact, looking back, I had yellow teeth growing up. Thanks for all those golden milk lattes, Mom! As with drinking coffee and red wine, just brush your teeth or at least drink some water after enjoying this turmeric filled drink! And stock up on teeth whitening strips!

Golden Milk Ingredients
Let’s break down the other ingredients of a traditional Golden Milk Latte and how they work in harmony with one another. First, the use of full fat coconut milk is an essential part of this drink. The full fat in the milk helps aid in the absorption of the curcumin in the turmeric. Note that if you use light coconut milk, just add ghee or coconut oil for healthy fat. See recipe notes.
The black pepper adds a spicy note and is also said to work with the curcumin. In Ayurveda, black pepper the digestive “agni” or fire in Sanskrit, which stimulates digestion. It is called “The King of Spices”.
Cardamom is an exotic spice know as “The Queen Of Spices”. It has a rich and alluring flavor that is complex and unique. And it also aids in digestion by reducing gas and bloating.
Ginger has also long been used for its anti-inflammatory properties. In addition, it aids with nausea, pain relief, and illnesses such as colds and flu.
Golden Syrup is a vegan thick and buttery treacle that is rich in color and sweet flavor. This is a wonderful sweetener that can replace corn syrup, molasses, honey, and maple syrup in many recipes.
Ceylon Cinnamon has a different flavor that other kinds. Learn all about it in my Coconut Cinnamon Roll post.

CBD or Hemp Oil
Before we get into this CBD Golden Milk recipe, let’s dive into the world of CBD or hemp oil. Cannabidiol, or CBD, is a chemical compound in marijuana. CBD is the most abundant non-psychoactive cannabinoid found in cannabis. THC is the other most prominent cannabinoid found in cannabis, however, THC will get you high while CBD will not. Both of these interact with your body through the endocannabinoid system. This system regulates functions like appetite, sleep, pain, memory, immune response, and mood, to name a few.
CBD is extracted from the cannabis plant and diluted in a carrier oil like coconut or hemp. CBD is now legal throughout the USA. It is widely used for relaxation, pain relief, anxiety, inflammation, depression, and more. CBD has relaxation effect. But it will not get you stoned or high! It’s also one of the hottest trends that is only getting hotter for a variety of reasons and uses. CBD is now being used in skincare, food, and drinks like this CBD Golden Milk.
When buying CBD oil, look for products that are pure and premium grade. To use CBD oil, follow the instructions. Furthermore, start with a small amount first. And consult with a health care expert before trying anything like CBD!
