An easy treat that takes less than 30 minutes! These tender and fluffy, these beautiful baked red velvet donuts are kissed with cocoa and smothered in cool cream cheese frosting.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly grease donut pans.
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together all dry ingredients (flour, sugar, cocoa, salt, baking powder). Make sure no clumps from the cocoa remain. Make a well in middle.
Then in a small bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, egg, food coloring, and vanilla.
Pour into well and gently mix to combine.
Then pour over melted butter and gently mix.
Put batter into a piping bag and pipe into the donut cavities. Or feel free to spoon it out.
Bake for 9-12 minutes.
Cool completely in a cooling rack before frosting.
Make frosting. Use a hand mixer to mix cream cheese until smooth. Then add in softened butter and mix for 30 seconds.
Then gradually add powdered sugar while mixing on low speed.
Finish with buttermilk, and vanilla extract. Beat on medium speed until smooth.
Spread over cooked donuts.
decorate with sprinkles and/ or cake donut crumbs left from turning donuts out of pan.
